On a purely practical level a pipe can symbolize many things.
A water pipe can give information as to how we might handle our emotions (the size and type in this case will be significant); a clay pipe might suggest former times or an old-fashioned attitude.
A tobacco pipe or chillum might suggest a means of escape, whereas a musical pipe indicates our connection with the rhythm of life.
